Purulent Squares

I have not had much free time this week. In the rare idle moments I have thought about the  New York Times NumberPlay about infection on a 12 x 12 grid. It is trivial that 1 infected sqaure cannot propagate and 2 squares cannot as the only configurations that are not a fixed configurations terminate after one iteration. Placing infection on the diagonal squares leads to a self propagating wave above and below the diagonal. So far I have not thought any further…still a little time but while I muse I append two animated gifs. One with a random starting position and the other the diagonal.

I look forward to the solution.
