Machine Learning for Hackers

This is an excellent book for getting an insight into machine learning algorithms and using R to play around with these concepts. I believe authors achieve their aim of providing a quick and  hands-on introduction to the tools involved in this intersection of Mathematics, Statistics,  and Computer Science with extremely broad applications.

It is written clearly. The examples are interesting and the exposition proceeds with manageable steps. The authors make it clear when the theoretical underpinnings are omitted but use empirical play to illustrate the key limitations of particular algorithms.

I enjoyed getting to understand more about R and about the tools  available for data visualization and analysis. I hope I will get the time to ‘play’.

The R packages used and other useful material from the book is available here.

The open source graph visualization and manipulation software Gephi is available here.
