Bode and Nyquist Plots

The column of plots below (from top to bottom) are:

  • Bode Plot: Gain (dB) versus frequency (radians/second)
  • Bode Plot: Phase (degrees) versus frequency (radians/second)
  • Nyquist Plot: Im(H(j\omega)) versus Re(H(j\omega))

Mathematica has BodePlot[], NyquistPlot[] and NicholsPlot[] functions for visualizing the gain and phase responses of various transfer functions. I created my own (inferior) versions of these functions to understand their inter-relationship.

I used the transfer function: H(s)=\frac{1}{s^2+s+3} to generate the following animation using Manipulate[].

I exported the animation to a flash object (swf).WordPress.com makes embedding these objects somewhat difficult. Ultimately, I used vodpod (see hyperlink below).

Vodpod videos no longer available.
